Course: Colloid Chemistry and Colloidal Dispersions

21-23 May

“It was very intense but we got a good overview of the field”*
“The information in the handouts is clear and really easy to follow.” *

This 3-day intensive course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental and practical aspects of colloid chemistry and colloidal dispersions. The course is focused on particles that are dispersed in liquids. Nearby topics, such as surfactant chemistry, polymers in solution and emulsions, are also covered to some degree in order to make the course complete on a stand-alone basis. The course is relevant for industrialists, researchers and students working with development and formulation of any colloidal system, be it paints, coatings, ceramics, food or pharmaceutical. This course is organized annually and has been held for five consecutive years since 2014.

Course: Bubble and Foam Chemistry

18-19 September

“Bob is a very good teacher! He made it possible to follow all the lectures even for someone without a chemistry background like me!”*

“Clear contents, a good balance between theoretical information and more applied examples. The simplicity of demo sessions made it easy to remember the phenomena.”*

This 2-day course provides a straightforward introduction to the principles and properties of foams and foaming surfactants. It discusses the key ideas that underpin why foaming occurs, how it can be avoided and how different degrees of antifoaming can be achieved, and covers the latest test methods, including laboratory and industrial developed techniques. Combining academic and industrial viewpoints and detailing a variety of different kinds of foams, from wet detergents and food foams, to polymeric, material and metal foams, it connects theory to real-world applications and recent developments in foam research. This course is organized every two years and was held for the first time in 2017.

Surface Analysis and Characterization – an Instrument Workshop

6 November

” I got a  good overview of the different available techniques. The information was presented in a way that made it easy to assess if the technique could be useful in my work.”*

This one-day workshop on surface analysis and characterization instruments provides the opportunity to get acquainted with a range of different techniques. During stops in the laboratories of RISE you will get concise information from our specialists and see the instruments. At the end of the day you will have acquired a better understanding of how results from these techniques can be used by your company/organization in research, product and process development and troubleshooting. This workshop is intended for engineers, laboratory personnel and scientists working with research, development or quality control of products for which surface or interfacial properties have a major impact on product performance. The workshop is organized annually and has been held for 5 consecutive years since 2014.

Workshop: Freeze-dried formulations of biologics

November (date to be announced)

The interest on active biological substances for its use in pharmaceuticals is growing rapidly. For stability reasons, these biological substances often require dry formulations.
Freeze-drying is the process of choice in most cases. This workshop will provide an introduction to freeze-drying of biologics on lab/pilot scale. We will present the theory behind freeze-drying, introduce formulation strategies for biologics, and discuss typical characterization methods. We will also cover an introduction to freeze-drying equipment as well as means to control the process on lab/pilot scale. This workshop takes place within the context of NextBioForm, The Centre for Formulation and Processing of Biologics (http://www.nextbioform.se/).
